Calls for Proposals on Course Development and Teaching Innovations

MOE Key Laboratory in Econometrics, Xiamen University

Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory in Statistical Science, Xiamen University

November 18, 2011

To promote high-quality innovative teaching with use of cutting-edge methods and technologies, the MOE Key Laboratory in Econometrics, Xiamen University and the Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory in Statistical Science, Xiamen University would like to provide research funding on course developments and teaching innovations. All faculties of WISE and School of Economics at Xiamen University are strongly welcome to apply for this research fund.

Purpose:

This research fund would provide support in

(1) Course development—designing a course which can make use of the experimental economic lab, the financial lab, and statistical software. This course should be in need of WISE and SOE.

(2) Teaching innovations—including but not limited to collecting new course materials such as case study, or developing new teaching methodology, which involve the use of the experimental economic lab and financial lab.

Reward:

All rewards are research grants, not labor fee. The reward for course development is up to 10,000RMB, and the reward for teaching innovations is ranged from 2000 to 5000RMB, depending on the proposed contents. A committee at the MOE Key Lab and the Fujian Provincial Key Lab will review the applications and make a decision about whether to reward and how much to reward.

Application:

Any faculty from WISE and SOE at Xiamen University who plans to apply should submit a proposal to Wenting Zhang (fionazhang.wise@gmail.com) before Jan 15th, 2012. The proposal is up to 3 pages for a course development plan and up to 2 pages for other teaching innovations, and the proposal can be written either in Chinese or English. It should provide information about targeting participants, course objective and contents, making it clear how the course development or teaching innovations can be of benefit to students and lead to more efficient use of our lab resource.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Professor Chen Haiqiang (hqchen2009@gmail.com) or Wenting Zhang (fionazhang.wise@gmail.com).

Appendix: A brief introduction to Laboratories under the MOE Key Laboratory in Econometrics

The Financial Laboratory

The Financial Laboratory is located at the Room C208 of Econ Building. Created as a partnership between academia and industry, the financial laboratory aims at providing a state of art facility that could contribute to the integration of theory and practice by delivering hands on experience to users. Currently, the financial laboratory has 66 personal computers and one projector. Each computer has installed software such as Matlab, Microsoft office, R and Stata. Users can explore the virtual exchange platform featuring real time stock quotes. They have access to the global financial community and timely resources. They can analyze the financial databases purchased from GTA, including CSMAR database, TAQ high frequency database, or database purchased by the Xiamen University library. The financial laboratory is a nice venue to support and promote quantitative research and teaching in a range of financial disciplines, including investment strategy and portfolio management, financial engineering and risk management, trading, and analysis of the market microstructure.

The Finance and Economics Experimental Laboratory

The Finance and Economics Experimental Laboratory (FEEL) is located at the Room D109 of Econ Building. The target of FEEL is to establish a leading institute in experimental economics and finance research which makes significant impact through scholarly achievement, contributions to the transformation of university education in China, and positively affect the productivity of local government and industry. Currently, FEEL has 35 personal computers and one projector. The physical layout of the lab and the IT infrastructure is optimally designed for the collection of data through experiments with human subjects that adhere to highest scientific standards. In FEEL, researchers can conduct experimental learning activities for courses, organize workshops on training program and teach how to conduct experiments. FEEL is a nice venue to host internet servers that allow classroom experiments to be run remotely at other institutions, and host community outreach efforts in which industry or government officials can “test bed” alternative policies or business strategies.
